One of those is whether there are bees living in and around golf courses throughout the Phoenix, Arizona metro area.

Short answer: Yes.

First, many agree that Arizona is globally recognized as a premier golfer’s paradise. Every year, millions of players, ranging from casual weekend enthusiasts to seasoned PGA pros, flock to the Grand Canyon State to tee off against a backdrop of pristine fairways, towering saguaro cacti, and dramatic desert peaks. The state’s multi-billion-dollar golf industry thrives on delivering a flawless outdoor experience. Yet, manicured turf lies a hidden, potentially lethal hazard that has nothing to do with deep sand bunkers, tricky water hazards, or native desert out-of-bounds areas: the Africanized honeybee.

Over the past few decades, Arizona’s lush golf courses have transformed from simple sports venues into prime real estate for highly aggressive wild bee colonies. What players see as a beautifully designed recreational haven, wild bees see as the ultimate sanctuary for survival in an otherwise unforgiving climate. Understanding this unique desert danger, recognizing the triggers of an attack, and knowing how to respond under pressure have become just as critical to a safe round of golf as reading a break on the green.

Why Arizona Golf Courses are Bee Magnets

To understand why bees gather on golf courses, you must first look at the surrounding landscape. The Sonoran Desert is a beautiful but intensely hot environment. Water is exceptionally scarce for most of the year, and summer temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit. For a wild bee colony, surviving these conditions requires a massive amount of energy, particularly because bees must use water to cool their hives through a process of evaporative cooling.

A golf course, by contrast, is a literal oasis. It offers everything a wild bee colony needs to thrive, concentrated into a single, easily accessible footprint:

  • Infinite Water Sources: Honeybees require constant access to water to dilute crystallized honey and to air-condition their hives. The artificial lakes, meandering streams, irrigation puddles, and active sprinkler heads found on a golf course provide a reliable, endless supply of moisture.
  • Dense Foraging Grounds: Unlike the sparse desert scrub, a golf course features heavily irrigated turfgrass, meticulously curated floral landscaping, and dense clusters of blooming desert flora. Trees like the Palo Verde, Mesquite, and Acacia offer highly concentrated, reliable sources of pollen and nectar right on the perimeter of the play areas.
  • Ideal Nesting Structures: Golf courses are filled with prime nesting real estate. Hives are frequently established in natural tree hollows, deep rock crevices, and hanging cactus cavities. Furthermore, human-made structures present perfect shelter: drainage pipes, irrigation valve boxes, undercarriages of bridges, maintenance sheds, and the deep eaves of clubhouses all offer protection from predators and the elements.

Because these resources are grouped so closely together, golf courses do not just attract passing foragers, they actively encourage the establishment of massive, permanent feral colonies.

The Africanized Factor: A Different Kind of Bee

The presence of bees wouldn’t be quite as alarming if they were standard, docile European honeybees. However, the reality in the American Southwest is much different. Experts estimate that the vast majority of wild, feral honeybee colonies found across Arizona are Africanized.

While Africanized honeybees look physically identical to standard European honeybees and possess the same individual venom potency, their collective behavior is drastically different. They are notoriously defensive and hyper-sensitive to external disturbances. The key differences in their behavior include:

  • Lower Provocation Threshold: Africanized bees require much less disturbance to trigger a full-scale defensive response. A minor intrusion that a European colony might ignore can cause an Africanized colony to deploy its forces.
  • Massive Swarm Response: When an Africanized hive defends itself, it does so with overwhelming numbers. They will deploy up to ten times more bees from the hive than their European counterparts, turning a localized nuisance into a life-threatening emergency in seconds.
  • Relentless Pursuit: Once provoked, Africanized bees will pursue a perceived threat for vast distances—often up to a quarter of a mile or more. They will remain agitated and highly aggressive for hours after the initial disturbance, creating a lingering hazard for anyone else in the vicinity.

Tragically, this heightened aggression has led to multiple high-profile, devastating incidents on Arizona courses. Groundskeeper Rick Messina lost his life at Oro Valley’s El Conquistador course after being swarmed while mowing the rough near the eighth hole. In another harrowing incident in Sun City West, a maintenance worker survived only after being rushed to the hospital and intubated, having sustained nearly 2,000 stings when he accidentally disturbed an underground hive. Even casual golfers have found themselves suddenly swarmed and hospitalized after walking too close to an unseen colony nestled in a decorative rock wall or tree limb.

Noise and Vibration

For golfers and maintenance crews alike, the primary catalyst for a sudden, aggressive attack is almost always noise and physical vibration. Africanized bees have evolved to view heavy vibrations as an immediate threat to the structural integrity of their hives.

On a golf course, heavy equipment is constantly in motion. The loud, low-frequency rumble of a commercial lawnmower, a weed trimmer, a leaf blower, or even the close pass of a gas-powered golf cart can easily be interpreted by a colony as a predator attempting to destroy their home.

The mechanics of an attack are swift and chemical. The moment the first defensive bee senses a threat and inflicts a sting, it releases an alarm pheromone—a chemical signal that smells faintly like bananas. This pheromone acts as a battlefield beacon. It alerts the rest of the hive to the exact location of the target, drawing hundreds or thousands of angry nest-mates into the fray within a matter of seconds. For a golfer or worker caught in this zone, the environment can shift from a peaceful afternoon to a chaotic nightmare in the blink of an eye.

How to Protect Yourself on the Course

Survival during a bee encounter relies heavily on situational awareness, quick thinking, and overcoming natural instincts that might otherwise lead to worse outcomes. Golfing safely in Arizona requires sticking to a strict safety protocol:

  • Listen and Observe: Keep your ears tuned to the environment. A loud, low-frequency hum coming from a specific area is a major red flag. If you notice a high concentration of bees entering and exiting a specific tree hollow, rock crevice, or irrigation box, do not attempt to retrieve a lost golf ball. Skip the area entirely, take a drop, and immediately notify the clubhouse.
  • Never Swat or Crush: If a single bee is buzzing persistently around your head, do not swat at it, and absolutely do not crush it against your skin. Crushing a bee instantly releases the alarm pheromone, which will call in reinforcements from any nearby hive. Instead, remain as safe as possible and quickly walk out of the immediate area.
  • Run in a Straight Line: If a hive breaks into a defensive swarm and begins attacking, do not freeze, do not play dead, and do not try to fight them off with a golf club or towel. Run as fast as you can in a straight line away from the site. Because Africanized bees target movement, trying to dodge or weave will only keep you in their defensive zone longer.
  • Protect Your Face and Airways: As you flee, pull your polo shirt up over your face or shield your head tightly with your arms. Africanized bees instinctively target the dark, moving areas of a predator’s face—specifically the eyes, nose, and mouth. Preventing stings to your airways is crucial to avoiding suffocation from swelling.
  • Avoid the Water Hazards: A common and highly dangerous mistake is jumping into a golf course pond or lake to escape an attack. Africanized bees are incredibly patient. The swarm will hover directly above the water’s surface for a long time, waiting for you to surface for air, at which point they will resume stinging your face and head. Furthermore, desert golf course ponds can contain sharp drop-offs, hidden debris, and chemical runoff, creating additional drowning hazards.
  • Seek Enclosed Shelter Immediately: Your primary goal when running should be finding a sealed structure. Run directly into a fully enclosed area, such as a golf course restroom, a maintenance shed, the main clubhouse, or the inside of a closed vehicle with the windows rolled up. Do not worry about bringing a few bees inside with you; once isolated from the pheromone cloud of the main swarm, individual bees lose their collective aggression and become confused by the indoor lighting, allowing you to deal with them safely.
